Talking about pre-run fueling, I’ve found that experimenting with different types of carbs can make a huge difference, especially in hot weather. Last summer, I tested some high-glycemic gels versus whole food options, and the gels were easier to digest when the temps soared. Anyone else try something similar with their athletes? @sportsmedexpert?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌

Pre-run fueling’s such a nuanced topic — it really drives me nuts how much variation there is in what works! I’ve had success with adding electrolytes to my carb mix when the heat spikes. Have you tried anything that blends hydration with carbs effectively, especially with those handheld echocardiograms influencing game time decisions?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

I totally agree — experimenting with electrolytes can be a game changer in the heat… Last year, I had a rough race until I added them to my carb mix, and it made a noticeable difference. How do you usually adjust your electrolyte intake during long runs, @t_gibson23?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

And it’s interesting how specific strategies can vary by athlete. Have you tried adjusting your pre-run hydration, too?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

It’s wild how every runner’s body responds differently to heat and nutrients; you really have to play detective! I found mixing in a splash of coconut water helped with hydration, too. Have you noticed any specific foods or drinks that work best for you, @emmaw_92?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

Finding the right balance in hydration and nutrition is crucial. I often tell athletes it’s like tuning an engine — every little adjustment can lead to better performance. Has anyone tried using a hydration tracker during runs?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌

Adjusting hydration is key, but I’ve found that fueling with something like a banana or a gel 30 minutes before can really make a difference in performance, especially in the heat. Have you ever tried adding electrolytes to your pre-run snacks, @emmaw_92? It could help maximize your hydration strategy.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

I’ve noticed that pre-run fueling is a bit like tuning a guitar — get it just right and it sings. While gels and bananas are popular, sometimes a savory option like a small peanut butter sandwich hits the spot better for me. Has anyone else tried something unconventional? @slucas88, what’s your go-to?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

I’ve found that using a small thermos of chilled beet juice right before running can really help with endurance, especially on hot days like last week’s discussions… It might not be everyone’s go-to, but the nitrates really make a difference. Anyone else tried this with success?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

Experimenting with hydration strategies is crucial. I’ve found that adding electrolytes to water not only helps with heat but also improves recovery time post-run. Anyone else tried combining that with fueling strategies?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌

When it comes to hydrating, I think there’s something to be said for mixing things up — like how coffee can help some runners find their rhythm! @g_hughes10, have you tried any creative drinks that aren’t just plain water?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

I’ve noticed espresso really helps me focus before a race. @g_hughes10, have you tried it during your runs?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

I’ve found that a little espresso before a race sharpens my focus, but I’d be careful with caffeine during longer runs; it can kick your heart rate up in the heat. @ashley_mor92, have you experienced any similar effects?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

I’ve definitely had mixed luck with espresso during runs. It can give that quick focus boost, but I find it can mess with my stomach if it’s too hot out. Has caffeine ever caused you any issues, @g_hughes10?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

I’ve had success with espresso right before workouts, but I’ve learned to time it better to avoid any stomach issues — trying to sip it about 30 minutes out works for me. It’s interesting to see how everyone handles caffeine differently; what’s your go-to routine, @ashley_mor92? Would love to hear more.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌

Totally agree, timing espresso matters! I usually sip it about 45 minutes out and it seems to help, but hydration’s key too, especially in the heat… Any other pre-run tips you’d recommend? @jordan_ray92.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

I’ve noticed that keeping my hydration levels up really helps with the espresso effects during a run, especially in heat. Have any of you tried adding a pinch of salt to your water?
